About Akiko

Dr. Kobayashi has been registered to practice before the USPTO since 1999 and has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in electronics, mechanics and software arts as well as in business methods. She also handles international cases including PCT filings and direct foreign filings in collaboration with foreign associates. She has experience working as an in-house patent practitioner for a start-up company in San Diego, where she provided litigation and reexamination support for outside counsel, trained company's engineers on patent basics, and implemented the IP protection process, in addition to drafting numerous patent applications directed to the company's wireless technology.
Before entering patent practice, Dr. Kobayashi was a member of the technical staff in Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies (formerly AT&T), working on various R&D projects related to power electronics and power semiconductor devices.
Prior to her corporate R&D tenure, Dr. Kobayashi obtained a Ph.D. in solid state physics from the University of Illinois and subsequently spent some more years in academia as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Maryland. Her research interests included electronic structures and phonon states in semiconductors and hetero-structures, novel material growth simulations, and other topics in solid state physics.
